Planning a trip

Imagine that we are planning a trip to the Middle East for one week. The object is to learn as much about the people and cultures, as well as the politics, of the region. Your mission is to plan an itinerary that gets us the most bang for the buck. Remember to take into account all the real limitations that may arise, such as dangers to foreigners or religious restrictions. List your itinerary in the blog. Explain why you picked the places you chose. A visual presentation will be given by all students the week after Feb. vacation. Below is just one of many websites available to help you get started.

November 8, 2008-November 14, 2008: The Amazing Race Around the Middle East: The Capitals and Beyond

Day One: Our journey begins in the capital of Turkey. Ankara, Turkey has great food, museums, and places to shop. At eight forty-five we will enter the Museum of Anatolian Civilisation. The museum will be a great historical start to our trip as we learn about the beginnings of Asia Minor and its inhabitants. We will then proceed to find the forested mosque known as Aslanhane Camii. The mosque has become an architectural attraction in Ankara because of its carved wooden columns and wooden roof. By this time hunger will start to set in so we will head for the street vendors to try the native Turkish foods. After we have filled our stomachs we will board an airplane and quickly jet over to Damascus, Syria at nine o’clock pm sharp.

Day Two: Our morning will begin at seven am as we visit Al-Takieh al-Suleimaniyeh, which is a structure that will give us an idea of the original Ottoman Empire. Being one of the oldest cities in the Middle East, Old Damascus will be a wonder to all of our eyes as we take a walking tour through the city from ten o’clock am until 5 o’clock pm. We will begin our walk at the Four Seasons Hotel and then walk thirty minutes to Azem Palace, twenty minutes to Damascus Citadel, twenty-five minutes to Rugayya Mosque, twenty minutes to the Shrine of Saida Zainab, and twenty minutes to St. Paul’s Church. We will then eat dinner at the Four Seasons at their restaurant Al Halabi. We will then adjourn to our rooms for the night at the Four Seasons before rising at six o’clock am for our morning flight to Amman, Jordan.

Day Three: The Jordan Valley will be a fun and exciting day trip for us! We will ride our way through the valley on horseback from the Princess Alia Centre for Riding located at the Hussein Sports Club. We will then journey to The Citadel in a taxi. The Citadel is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon and holds remains from the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic eras. We will then eat at the local restaurants to quickly fill our stomachs before our next stop. After a long day we will return to the valley where we will float away in the salty Dead Sea. The Jordan Rift Valley is 1,312 feet below sea level and is the lowest place on the face of the Earth. We will then rest our heads at the Grand Hyatt Hotel located right in Amman.

Day Four: At seven o’clock am sharp we will board yet another plane to Saudi Arabia, visiting their capital of Riyadh. Once in Riyadh we will engage in one of the best activities known to man; we will shop! Al Faisliyah Center is the second tallest building in the world and is the home to one of the largest shopping centers! After shopping we will eat at the point of the building; the gold ball at the top is a restaurant. We will then take a quick taxi ride to the King Abdul Aziz Military Museum which will help us see the development of Saudi forces and their weaponry. We will then rest our heads at the Four Seasons Riyadh which will cost us around two-hundred and forty-one dollars a night.

Day Five: We will then fly to Baghdad, Iraq where there have been current controversies occurring with the United States; therefore, we must travel cautiously. We will first take a one-hour taxi ride to the ancient city of Babylon. Although Babylon has been robbed and rebuilt under the rule of Saddam Hussein and early German archaeologists, it continues to hold many rare ancient artifacts that will be fascinating to observe. We will then venture back to the “heart of the city” where we will spend the rest of the day at the Main Bazar. The Main Bazar has goods from all over the world and will allow us to compare the different cultures. We will then dine at the Maarsgourf restaurant which lies next to the Tigris River. Later we will retire at the Marble Palace Hotel.

Day Six: Our next stop will be Tehran, Iran. We will travel with the use of the subway during our time in Iran. Our first stop will be the National Jewels Museum. The museum houses some of the world’s most exquisite and timeless jewels. We will then stop for a quick lunch before going to the National Museum of Iran. The museum is the place to find Persian artifacts including many pieces of pottery. Due to our limited amount of time and travel distance we will board a flight to our last destination after dinner.

Day Seven: Our last stop will be Kabul, Afghanistan. On our last day we will hike and take in the views so we will have a lasting image of our amazing trip to the Middle East. The rolling hills that dot the landscape hill make great day adventures for us to conquer. We will then eat at the Delhi Darbar before catching our late flight back the United States.

Colleen’s Trip Itinerary
I planned my trip to the Middle East to be in late winter/early spring. To get there we will take United Airlines from Boston To Cairo, Egypt.
Day 1: I plan on spending our first day in Cairo, Egypt because of its many interesting, culturally important spots. I thought we would spend the morning in The Egyptian Museum because there, we could learn a lot about the ancient culture and history of Egypt. I also thought that it would be important to visit the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramid Complex. I allowed time so that we could walk around Cairo and have lunch at one of the little markets and enjoy the city, as well. I decided that we would spend the night at a small place called the Nileview Bed and Breakfast. It seems like it would be a good place to talk to the owners and get to know some locals.
Day 2: I plan on spending the second day in the Jordan area. I thought it would be fun to spend the morning at the ruins in Petra. I also found that visiting Wadi Rum, which is a huge valley cut from stone, would be a great place to go. There, we could rock climb and ride the Arab horses. In the afternoon we could go to Aqaba to scuba dive and see it’s beautiful coral reefs. In the evening I plan to relax in the Dead Sea then we could go back for the night to the Ein Gedi Country Resort Hotel.
Day 3: In the morning on the third day I plan on going to Jerusalem, Israel. There, we could walk around the city and visit its architectural sites, like the Jerusalem Theater, and its many culturally important sites, then find lunch in one of the many markets, like the Mahane Yehuda Market. In the afternoon we will go to Lebanon, where we could see the Baalbek Ruins. We will also visit Beirut’s National Museum because of it many artifacts and history about Lebanon. That night we will relax at the Pension Al Koura Hotel.
Day 4: On the forth day, I plan on going to visit Syria. In the morning, we would go to Bosra where we would see the Ancient Roman Theater and the Bosra Ruins. Then we would spend the afternoon in Damascus. In Damascus, we would have lunch at one of their well known cafes. I plan on walking around the city to get accustomed to their culture and visit places like the Umayyad Mosque. We will also visit the beautiful town of Madaya, known for its cool sprint water and its big local market. That evening we would travel to the Beit Al Mamlouka Hotel, where we would spend the night.
Day 5: I plan on spending the fifth day in Turkey, and see its many amazing architectural buildings. First we would go to the Celsus Library in Ephesus. This building is important because it is one of the last examples of Ancient Roman libraries. Then we would travel to Istanbul, to walk around the city and visit The Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Bosphorus Bridge, which is the bridge that connects Europe and Asia. Then, we would spend the rest of the day in Ankara, a beautiful city with many beautiful buildings, and which has many places to go, including the Ankara castle, museums, parks, and old shops. We would spend the night in a hotel right in the middle Ankara called Hotel Ogulturk.
Day 6: We will spend the sixth day in Iran. For a good part of the day we would be in Dizin, which is a mountainous town north of Tehran, at a ski resort. Then we would go to Tehran where we would be able to see the Azadi Tower and the Azadi Stadium. Then we would spend the night at the Iranshahr Hotel.
Day 7: On the last day we would start out in Bahrain. There, we would travel to Qal’at al-Bahrain, which is an interesting artificial mound that was made to be lived in by humans in the 2300BC. Then we would go to Bahrain’s huge shopping center. After that we would travel to the UAE where we could watch a traditional camel race then go to Dubai to go to another shopping area and also to the Dubai Museum in the old Al Fahidi Fort. When we are finished we would go to the Dubai International Airport where we would catch our flight home.

Day One- Jordan(Sunday)
We will leave the hotel at 8:00 am and take a taxi ride over the Kings’ Highway to observe the beautiful dessert landscape that Jordan has to offer. Then at 11:00 am, we will take a quick swim in the Dead Sea to experience floating at the lowest point on earth. Later in the afternoon, we will enter the rose-carved city of Petra and take a guided tour throughout the many caverns to learn a little more about the history of Jordan.
Day Two- Lebanon(Monday)
At 5:00 am we will check out of the Grand Palace Hotel and catch a bus to Beirut, Lebanon. Once in Beirut, we will take an educational guided bus tour throughout the area and frequent stops at the Al-Nouzha Bath, Crusader Castle, the Ottoman Clock tower and Pigeon Rocks- just some of the many famous sites that Lebanon has to offer. For the rest of the day, we will explore the many shopping stores and outlets offered in the “Paris of the Middle East” and then learn more about the culture of the region by finishing the night at a local night club.
Day Three- Turkey(Tuesday)
At 8:00 am, we will check out of the Monroe Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon and take a bus to Ankara, Turkey. When we arrive at noon, we will have a quick lunch at Uludag Kebapcisi and sample the nationwide famous iskender. Afterwards, we will take off paragliding to observe the beautiful Turkish landscape. At 3:00 pm we will take a bus to Istanbul. We will make stops at the Blue Mosque and the Dolmabahçe Palace- where we will learn about the country’s government and politics. At 8:00 pm, we will catch a train and try to safely travel across Iraq to Tehran, Iran where we will then catch a bus to Kuwait.
Day Four- Kuwait(Wednesday)
At 5:00 am when we arrive at the Kuwait Public Transport Company Bus Station, we will take a bus and visit the Liberation Tower and take a walk up the observation tower at the Kuwait towers to observe the local lands. At 11:00 am, we will visit the National Museum where we will discover several different collections of Islamic art. At 3:00 pm, to take a fun break from all of the learning and discovering, we will spend the rest of the afternoon in Al-Madina Al-Tarfihiya- the city of entertainment which is one of Kuwait’s largest amusement parks. At 8:00 pm, when we are all tired out, we will try some Persian cuisine at the Shahrayar Restaurant.
Day Five- Saudi Arabia(Thursday)
At 7:00 am, we will check out of the hotel and catch a bus to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Here we will discover the development of the Saudi Forces at the King Abdul Aziz Military Museum and then experience the region’s spectacular views of the deserted village of Habalah while taking a ride in one of the cable cars that runs above the village. Then at 3:00 pm, we will learn about the rich history of Saudi Arabia in the eight different galleries offered within the National Museum. The museum houses impressive scale models of the holy mosques located in Mecca and Medina.* This is the closest you will be able to get to the holy sites because they are forbidden to non-muslims. Later that night, we will roam around the city of Riyadh to experience the culture of the people.
Day Six- Egypt(Friday)
At 6:00 am, plan to check out of the Riyadh Marriott Hotel and take a bus from Riyadh to Dhuba. From there we will catch a passenger ferry over the Red Sea to Safaga, Egypt and then a bus to Cairo. We will get to experience the deserts leading mode of transportation- camel back- as we discover the beauty of the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx in Giza and then visit the world famous Nile River. In the afternoon, we will learn about ancient Islamic artifacts while in the Museum of Islamic Art.
Day Seven- Israel(Saturday)
Starting at 8:00 am, we will check out of the Conrad Hotel and take a bus from Cairo to Caesarea, Israel where we will learn about the Roman Empire and the architecture during an underwater tour. From there, we will travel to Jerusalem and spend the rest of the day learning about the three different religions that Jerusalem is known for. We will visit the Dome of Rock (Islam), the Western Wall (Jewish), and the Church of All Nations (Christianity). For dinner we will go to Pinati where a huge variety of Middle Eastern cuisine is offered all day long.
*I picked these countries because I thought that they would be the most informational and that we as tourists would be able to learn a lot about the land and culture from visiting them. I tried to stay away from any countries that did not necessarily like Americans or tourists in general. Also, I tried to pick countries that were relatively close to each other because given the time period of only seven days I did not think that we would have enough time to travel long distances and still be able to experience what the lands had to offer. I also tried to experience a little bit of everything that there was to offer. I arranged walking and bus tours to observe the land and certain landmarks. I made sure to visit some of the world’s famous sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Dead Sea and I also planned to visit many of the mosques and churches so that we could get the opportunity to learn about different religions. I chose from a variety of museums in several of the countries so that we could explore the art, history, military, and politics of the regions. In the end, I picked these countries and sites to visit because I thought that they would give us the most opportunities for learning about the nation’s geography, history, politics, religions and culture.
